Savon de Marseille is a time-honored, sustainably made soap from Marseille, France, crafted with a minimum of 72% vegetable oils—primarily olive oil sourced from the surrounding Provençal region.
Traditionally cooked in cauldrons, it’s made using a centuries-old method that blends sea water, olive oil, and ash from sea plants. This 600-year-old technique yields dense, economical, biodegradable soap blocks that are gentler and more environmentally friendly than most commercial or homemade alternatives—yet incredibly effective for both household cleaning and personal care.
The art of making Savon de Marseille is steeped in history, passed down through generations and protected by tradition. Much like how only sparkling wine made in Champagne can bear its name, authentic Savon de Marseille must be produced in Marseille using the original process, a standard set by King Louis XIV in the 17th century.
Free from synthetic additives like dyes, perfumes, or harsh chemicals, this soap is as pure as it is powerful. What truly sets it apart is its versatility—it can cut through grease on a pan, lift stubborn stains, repel garden pests, and even be safely used for bathing babies. It’s a multi-purpose staple that honors the past while serving everyday modern needs.
100% Natural & Vegetal with no added scent, colour or preservatives, these Marseille soaps are excellent for the skin; they are traditionally used for laundry, too.
They are enriched with a minimum 72% oil and tested on friends, NOT animals.
USES
- Can be used in the kitchen to scrub dishes.
- Use in the shower or bath to wash face, hands, hair and body for daily cleansing.
- Create a lather with this soap and use for shaving.
- Gentle enough for little ones and babies for general washing in the tub.
- Rub block on linens before washing for everyday stain removal on things like grass and coffee.
- For oil stains like butter and olive oil, cover the stain with shaved Savon de Marseille soap flakes overnight and let the flakes absorb the oil. No water needed, the oils from the soap will extract the oils from the stain. The next day, rub with cold water and machine wash.
- Gentle enough for little ones and babies for general washing in the tub.
- I use soap flakes to make our laundry detergent and all purpose spray as well.
